'Name the film, but wrong answers only' meme is cinematic comedy gold

TwitterFacebook

Before your favorite films hit the big screens, they probably had a working title that, while technically accurate, could've made it a very different movie if usedThe Breakfast Club was The Lunch Bunch. Clueless was No Worries, I Was a Teenage Teenager. And American Pie was Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy That Can Be Made For Under $10 Million That Most Readers Will Probably Hate But I Think You Will Love.

But what about describing a movie using the name of another movie? Twitter might be onto something here.

The comedic possibilities are endless in this viral meme, which appears to have originated on Facebook and Reddit lolcat memes of yore. The resurgence seems to have come from actor and screenwriter Nathan Brimmer, who kicked off a series of tweets titled "Name the film. Wrong answers only," with a screenshot of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Or, as the comments sections calls it, The Aristocrats, Frost/Nixon, and Thelma and LouiseRead more...

Prime Day sale competition heats up with Target, ebay joining the mix

TwitterFacebook

Target just announced a massive two-day summer sale. It's called Target Deal Days, and it's going down on July 15 and 16.

If that sounds familiar, it's probably because those are the same dates as this year's Amazon Prime Day — announced hours after Amazon made the big reveal.

A competing two-day sale is major, but other retailers trying to mess with Prime Day's traffic isn't surprising. Amazon Prime Day 2018 was (by far) the most shopped day of the year, beating out both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The day was so hectic that Amazon actually went down with a 404 error for some shoppers.

This bestselling HD smart LED TV with built-in Fire TV is 40% off

TwitterFacebook

TL;DR: This 43-inch HD smart TV with built-in Fire TV is the No. 1 product in Amazon's LED & LCD TVs category. It normally retails for $299.99, but you can get it on sale right now for just $179.99 — a 40% savings.

OLED technology is the cool new kid in town, at least as far as TVs are concerned. But since it's still relatively new and somewhat difficult to produce, you can bet your bottom dollar that unless you stumble upon a rare sale, a nice OLED-based display will cost you, well... a lot of dollars.

That's not to say new LED and LCD TVs can't hold their own picture quality-wise, because they can — most notably Toshiba's 43-inch HD smart LED TV, which comes with Fire TV built-in. It's the No. 1 bestselling TV in Amazon's LED & LCD TVs category, and right now it's on sale for less than $200. Read more...

Apple's self-driving car project keeps moving with Drive.ai

TwitterFacebook

Drive.ai was known for its brightly colored autonomous vans, so it's somewhat ironic that the secretive and elusive Apple self-driving car division acquired the brand.

After murmurs earlier this month, Project Titan (as Apple's autonomous car team is known) is moving along with its so-called "acqui-hire" of Mountain View-based Drive.ai.

Drive.ai operated self-driving shuttles in Texas for the past year and raised $77 million since 2015, according to its Crunchbase listing. In March, its eight-month free shuttle pilot in Frisco, Texas ended and its four vehicles went to Arlington, Texas for a separate free service. The seven Drive.ai vans operating in Arlington were pulled off the road at the end of May. Read more...

'Orange is the New Black' final season trailer is just here to make you extremely nostalgic

TwitterFacebook

Orange is the New Black is taking us back to Litchfield – well, not all of us. The Season 7 trailer shows Piper adjusting to life after prison while the women of Litchfield continue to fight for justice in a system that seems bent on delivering anything but.

The trailer is all about nostalgia; wherever the story goes from here, Orange drew us in six years ago with indelible characters, and the hardest part of the show ending will be letting them go (even the chicken).

Orange is the New Black returns to Netflix for a final season on July 26. Read more...

Black + Decker electric food chopper is $15 off at Walmart

TwitterFacebook

TL;DR: The convenient Black + Decker electric food chopper will help you achieve delicious salsas, dips, and more — and you can pick one up for just $24.99 at Walmart.

Remember the Slap Chop? It’s probably not a far-fetched idea to think that anyone who bought one in its early days currently has theirs quietly collecting dust in the back of a cupboard. Yeah, it was a fun kitchen appliance at one point, but after two weeks of using it, the feeling of slapping various produce items to smithereens just wasn’t the same anymore. But, your chopping days don’t have to be over if you don’t want them to be. Read more...

AOC invites Megan Rapinoe to visit the House of Representatives

TwitterFacebook

It's not the White House, but that's exactly the point.

Less than a week after President Trump attempted to pick a fight with U.S. women's national soccer team star Megan Rapinoe after she mentioned that, under no circumstance, will she go "to the fucking White House," Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proffered a more, shall we say, enticing offer.

"It may not be the White House," tweeted Ocasio-Cortez on Friday, "but we’d be happy to welcome @mPinoe & the entire #USWMNT for a tour of the House of Representatives anytime they’d like."

Trump changes his mind, says Huawei can buy some U.S. tech after all

TwitterFacebook

Well that didn't take long.

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Chinese manufacturer Huawei will be able to once again purchase goods from U.S. technology companies. This is a sharp reversal from his stance in May 2019, when Reuters reported that the U.S. Commerce Department said the company would first need U.S. approval to purchase goods from American manufacturers.

According to The Washington Post, Trump made the announcement following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"We had a very, very good meeting with China, I would say probably even better than expected," the Post quotes Trump as saying.  Read more...

This grandpa's pure reaction to the gift of Lady Gaga tickets will brighten your day

TwitterFacebook

Every so often, a ray of light shines through to illuminate our dark world. This is one of those times.

Twitter's @boybehindbricks (display name Whit as of this writing), a graphic designer and self-described "cat mom," is a big Lady Gaga fan. So is her grandpa. They're both very aware that the pop star is in the midst of a long-term Las Vegas residency.

Whit is turning 21 in September and she was hoping to get the family out for one of Gaga's Vegas shows. But it wasn't to be; the tickets have been available long enough for the shows to sell out, and the pricing from any reseller is way outside the family's budget. Grandpa was disappointed. Stormzy's Glastonbury Festival set featured a badass sign language interpreter

TwitterFacebook

The U.K. grime star Stormzy staged an epic Glastonbury Festival set on Friday night, but the real star of the night was out in the crowd.

Tara Asher is a British Sign Language interpreter, and — according to the BBC's Colin Paterson — is also one of only four who specializes in signing grime. On Friday, Asher brought her talents to Stormzy's Glastonbury set, where she translated his entire set into BSL.

(For anyone who might not know, "grime" is a musical genre born in the U.K. that's like a blend of dancehall and hip hop.)

Asher's performance — there's no better word to describe her contribution to the show —  is a delight. She apparently spent an entire day rehearsing for each of the songs she performed. It shows. Read more...

Cookie Monster singing 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' is a moment of pure goodness

TwitterFacebook

Sometimes the world needs a moment that is so gloriously pure that nothing can ruin it. Thankfully, we have that moment thanks to Cookie Monster.

On Thursday afternoon, the famed Sesame Street character joined the list of legends to sing baseball classic "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. It was as amazing as you'd imagine.

The Cubs have hosted a rotating cast of celebrities to lead the crowd in song since the 1998 death of legendary broadcaster Harry Caray who would usually conduct the crowd at Wrigley. Many of those singers have been memorably awful. Read more...

Julia Weldon on new opportunities for non-binary performers and the power of Instagram

TwitterFacebook

Every day of Pride Month, Mashable will be sharing illuminating conversations with members of the LGBTQ community who are making history right now.

Julia Weldon is the non-binary artist we need in today's world.

For all those who are struggling with love, loss, and life, regardless of identity, this singer/songwriter's work emphasizes that we can't make it through life alone.

Before breaking into music, Weldon was a child actor at 13 (when their "boyishness" was an asset, they told Mashable) performing alongside career legend Meryl Streep in Before and After. It was through acting that they began to explore their queer and trans identity, and recognized the importance of LGBTQ representation to change lives.  Read more...

The innate pleasures of the YouTube music rabbit hole

TwitterFacebook

This is Ode To..., a weekly column where we share the stuff we're really into in hopes that you'll be really into it, too.

Echoing with the sounds of nature, the calls of birds and soft keys,  “A I R (Air In Resort)” suddenly popped up while I was listening to music on YouTube, something I tend to just leave on like the radio while working these days.

The album, which I'm now obsessed with, was produced by Japanese ambient musician Hiroshi Yoshimura. Designed to complement a fragrance for cosmetics company Shiseido back in 1984, the record was merely a gift with the perfume.

For that reason, “A I R (Air In Resort)” isn’t available on streaming services, and I’m puzzled to think where I would think to find it — if it didn’t just appear out of nowhere on YouTube. Read more...
