If you're looking for a Halloween costume that's instantly recognizable but not totally played out, I'd like to humbly suggest looking to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The best video game of the year (don't @ me, Destiny fans) is popular enough that everyone will get it, but not so recently released that there will be 30 other Links at your Halloween party.
ThinkGeek has you covered with officially-licensed Zelda gear for all of your Halloween needs. If you're dressing up as Link, you can't go wrong with the champion's tunic. While it may not show monsters' health, you will be immediately recognized as the Hylian champion. The tunic is long sleeved which does lose it authenticity points, but October is (typically) cold and this way you can wear it all autumn long, not just on Halloween.
